Beïnvloeden zoetstoffen de darmflora?

Een nieuwe studie bij muizen suggereert dat bij het toedienen van de maximaal toegestane hoeveelheid van drie zoetstoffen het glucosegehalte in het bloed wordt verstoord door het veranderen van de darmflora.

De International Sweeteners Association (ISA) weerlegt met klem de beweringen die in de Suez et al studie worden gemaakt (1). Er is een grote hoeveelheid wetenschappelijk bewijs dat overtuigend aantoont dat caloriearme zoetstoffen niet geassocieerd zijn met een verhoogd risico op obesitas en diabetes, en dat ze geen invloed hebben op de eetlust, op het suikergehalte in het bloed of op gewichtstoename. De verwijzingen naar deze studies zijn onderaan te vinden.

Talrijke peer-reviewed studies (2-8), tonen aan dat laagcalorische zoetstoffen waardevol kunnen zijn bij gewichtsbeheersing en op prijs worden gesteld door mensen met diabetes. Ze hebben ook hun plaats in een gezonde en evenwichtige voeding.
